The field of Transcutaneous Neuromodulation has been expanding over the past several years. As the name suggests, they are applied extremally on the skin, and do not require surgical implantation. These devices tend to be non-invasive, have low risk of side effects or adverse events, yet have solid data to demonstrate clinical efficacy, with devices being used independently or to supplement other standard of care treatments. They do not require surgical implantation and are used externally. There are devices with FDA clearances for musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia, migraine (both for acute and prevention, CIPN, opioid use disorders, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and likely more to come.
This session will review some of the devices in this new class along with approved clinical indications and provide insight as to how to leverage such technologies for patient care, especially when there is a need to be opioid sparing, enhance clinical outcomes when used in conjunction with SOC medications, or take advantage of non-pharmacologic options.
Learning Objectives:
Identify patients and conditions for whom transcutaneous neuromodulin devices may be appropriate
Explain potential mechanisms of actions for transcutaneous neuromodulation devices
Describe potential clinical benefits of Transcutaneous Neuromodulation devices
