When considering pharmacotherapy in the management of pain, it is important to consider a patient’s comorbidities to avoid creating a new issue or contributing to worsening of an existing problem. Comorbidities may also guide medication selection to target more than one problem. This presentation will review relevant medications from NSAIDs to opioids and their impact on cardiovascular disease. You will walk away knowing the dos and don’ts of medications to avoid “tearing up” any hearts.

Describe negative effects of medications used for managing pain on the cardiovascular system
Develop alternate treatment strategies for patients with comorbid pain and a cardiovascular diagnosis
Design a treatment plan for a patient with pain and a comorbid cardiovascular disease when given a patient case
