Nutrition is an important but underutilized pain management tool. Presenters will highlight specific research demonstrating the effect of nutrition on chronic pain including inflammatory disorders, fibromyalgia, dementia, migraines, and vitamin deficiencies. People with chronic pain are disproportionately affected by financial and mobility limitations which can impact nutritional intake. This course will equip healthcare professionals with clinical knowledge, tangible resources, and achievable nutritional strategies to help care for individuals suffering from chronic pain. This session leverages the expertise of 3 interdisciplinary clinicians to improve patient outcomes through the evaluation, management, and education of patients with chronic pain based on the latest evidence-based literature on pain and nutrition. Healthcare professionals will learn practices to adapt recommendations for diverse patient populations including those with low income and/or physical limitations.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the inflammatory response and its effect on pain perception
Identify medical conditions and nutritional deficiencies commonly associated with chronic pain
Discuss foods and nutritional supplements which may alleviate or exacerbate pain
Formulate patient-centered treatment plans that help people overcome physical and monetary limitations affecting food preparation
