Roberto Ciccocioppo’s major research focus is on the study of the
neurobiological basis of abnormal behavior and brain functions relevant to
human psychopathology, with an emphasis on substance use disorder.
Particular emphasis is given to the relationship between the use and
misuse of opioid substances and chronic pain. This line of research is
directed at understanding the neurological mechanisms responsible for this
association and identifying innovative pharmacological targets to aid in
the development of new, more effective analgesics and anti-addictive
agents. Additionally, Roberto Ciccocioppo has dedicated significant
attention to the study of neurocircuitry and molecular mechanisms controlling emotional and cognitive disturbances associated with protracted exposure to drugs of abuse or chronic stress, with a major focus on peptidergic-mediated signaling. He has also paid substantial attention to
the development of translational approaches using brain imaging in combination with validated animal models to improve the transition from preclinical to clinical research.
