Abstract Title: PainScript’s Mobile Health Engagement in Managing Chronic Pain: A Retrospective Analysis of Patient Adoption and Sustained Use


Background: Mobile health (mHealth) technologies are transforming chronic pain management by enhancing patient-provider communication. Numerous apps offer clinical information to improve patient outcomes through chronic care management (CCM), remote patient monitoring (RPM), and remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM). Monitoring models vary by purpose, requirements, time and expertise investment, questions of clinical utility, and reimbursement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and commercial payers. Patient engagement remains a significant barrier to widespread adoption of mHealth platforms.

Purpose/Objectives: This study evaluates the adoption patterns and sustained use of PainScript’s mHealth platform for RTM of chronic pain management in a large Midwestern practice. It investigates patient acceptance across age groups over 90 days.


Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from a large Midwestern practice of all patients who engaged with PainScript’s mHealth platform for RTM from February 1 to April 30, 2024. Patient demographics, engagement metrics, and clinical outcomes were analyzed to identify patterns of adoption and sustained use. Patient feedback was analyzed for perceived improvements in access to clinical information and greater involvement in care management.


Results: The analysis included data from 3,280 patients (ages 18-85). Patient group was 1,078 (33%) male, 2,201 (67%) female (1 patient identified as “other” gender). The initial engagement rate was 74% with an overall retention rate of 74% at 90-days. Engagement metrics were consistent across all age groups: Millennials (1981-1986; n=192): 75%, Gen X (1965-1980; n=1,072): 74%, Baby Boomers (1946-1964; n=1,827): 75%, and Silent Generation (1928-45; n=187): 74%. Patient feedback highlighted improved access to clinical information and greater involvement in care management.

Conclusions/Implications for future research and/or clinical care: PainScript’s mHealth platform for RTM showed high patient acceptance. Sustained engagement across different age groups over 90 days suggests ease of usability for all ages. Further research is needed to evaluate long-term sustainability and identify factors that influence continued engagement. Understanding these factors is crucial for optimizing mHealth platforms for maximum impact on clinical outcomes and patient care.
